Von Doepp graduated from Burlington one year too early to take advantage of the varsity debut in 2019, but now she and a handful with ties to our area are getting set to play in next month’s Under-24 World Ultimate Championships in England. “Where Ultimate now in Vermont is something that’s written about in newspapers and they get to play on like the turf of BHS, I spent my high school playing on like a mediocre grass field that wasn’t even on the BHS campus.” “It’s definitely played a factor, maybe not necessarily in terms of skill, but at least in terms of visibility,” Von Doepp said. There are several reasons for that, but one is pretty obvious: Vermont is still the only state that sponsors the sport at the high school varsity level. “When I came into UVM, we were a regionals-definitely, nationals-extremely hopeful team, and now we are a nationals-definitely and national finals-hopefully team.” “It’s really been incredible to watch it grow,” Von Doepp said of the program. And UVM has two of the best college teams in the country, with both Ruckus and Chill reaching the national semifinals back in May. It’s a different way of like expressing your team values.”īut make no mistake: this is a sport that has only become more and more competitive. “It’s been Ruckus since like the ‘90s, and so it’s just really fun. “Historically, it’s been because a lot of times club teams aren’t allowed to use UVM logos and names and other such things,” Von Doepp said. Rather than being called the Catamounts, UVM’s women’s team is called Ruckus and the men’s team is named Chill. That spirit lives on to some extent in the team names and uniforms of schools like UVM. Now if you grew up in the ‘80s, ‘90s, or 2000s, you probably remember Ultimate as having somewhat of a counterculture element to it. We put a lot of dedication and effort into that while trying to keep the playing part going.” We were doing a lot of leadership restructuring and fixing of our social communities. “Then that sophomore year of mine in March, we were sent home for the pandemic. “I transferred into UVM, came to Ruckus,” Von Doepp said. She played for the BHS club team.and after transferring back to her hometown her sophomore year of college, VOn Doepp joined the women’s Ultimate team at UVM. By the time I graduated, we had five different teams.” When I started at Burlington High School, we had one team of 20 people, 25 people on a good day. “My dad started organizing pickups for myself and other kids in my grade, and then started to get more serious when I entered high school. “I started playing Ultimate in middle school,” Von Doepp said. (WCAX) - Burlington native Sarah Von Doepp got an early start in the sport of Ultimate. Pretty much the same type of weather will occur through the weekend with each day’s high temperature modulated by cloud cover and how numerous showers and thunderstorms become. And with the southern storm opening up and slowly lifting to the north, there will be chances for at least scattered showers and some thunderstorms with considerable cloudiness, but also some intervals of sunshine. To the south, where it’s cloudier, expect highs in the 70s.īy Friday, quite a bit of mugginess will arrive with dewpoints coming up into the 60s, really for the first time this season. “When Woodford came out with their rye whiskey,” says Mihalich, “they on-purpose didn’t make it much different from their bourbon, because they were trying to attract bourbon drinkers to rye.” Because… science?Īdding to the confusion is the chemistry of rye, which contains many of the same cellulose compounds as the oak used to age whiskey. You want to have the versatility in products for them to explore and discover.” “Millennials like trying new things, tasting new things, want to feel special and unique and thoughtful. “Marketers in spirits talk a lot about the Millennial consumer,” says Marianne Eaves, the former master distiller at Castle & Key who now runs a thriving consulting practice. The major whiskey brands’ expressions of rye often have more to do with marketing than aesthetics. Mashbill is only one of 10 or 20 decisions that relate to the final flavor.” Novelty sells “What doesn’t follow is that is going to be expressed in the final product in a way that is strong enough that you’re going to pick it up. “The chemistry of rye is different from the chemistry of corn or wheat or malt,” says Nicole Austin, General Manager and Distiller at George Dickel. “You can’t tell the difference,” says Bryson, “because there’s a hell of a lot of rye in your bourbon.” Lahne, “it is possible for a 2% difference in mashbill to tip a whiskey from one category into the other”, and it is not possible for even the most discerning tasters to consistently recognize such a small difference. The rest were blends of both corn and rye, inevitably exhibiting attributes of both. Lahne’s selection of what he calls “commercial” whiskies used in the study contain just one with no corn ( Bulleit Rye) and one with no rye ( Maker’s Mark). Lahne’s contention that bourbon and rye are indistinguishable, there is a lesson hidden in the study. “When people taste our whiskey, they do see a very stark difference from bourbon.”Īnd, finally, Colin Blake, who teaches distilling at the Distilled Spirits Epicenter in Louisville, rejected the premise with a barrel-strength sound bite aimed at one of Lahne’s collaborators, whose name is-no kidding-Tom Collins: “I don’t trust whiskey information from a guy named after a gin drink.” Never mind a gin drink that is said to be born out of an elaborate practical joke. “I would obviously dispute that,” says Herman Mihalich, founder and distiller of Dad’s Hat Rye. Other whiskey partisans had similar reactions. There are a lot of different factors and I don’t think it could be simply evaluated.” “I was going to say that’s nonsense,” he says, “but I won’t go that strong. He had no idea his writing had been quoted in the study and received the news with good-natured disbelief. Bryson lives in Pennsylvania and has, it’s fair to say, a fondness for the state’s native spirit. Lew Bryson, the author of Whiskey Master Class and Tasting Whiskey, is quoted in the study as an example of the conventional wisdom that bourbon and rye are discernibly different. It was nice to see my suspicion confirmed.” “As someone who buys and drinks a lot of whiskey,” says Lahne from his office at Virginia Tech University, “I personally thought the difference wasn’t large. Lahne published the results in the Journal of Food Science with a title only an academic could love: “Bourbon and Rye Whiskies are Legally Distinct but Are Not Discriminated by Sensory Descriptive Analysis”. And what those impressions added up to was, basically, nothing. Then, the judges tasted 24 whiskeys, always blind and in different orders and combinations, assembling thousands of tasting notes using the agreed-upon descriptors. In guided, blind tastings, they identified 23 flavor elements in American whiskey and developed a uniform vocabulary to describe them. The judges had no idea what it was they were testing. They trained 11 “judges”, most of whom came out of the exceptional wine program at University of California at Davis. They designed a new study to determine whether rye and bourbon could be distinguished by taste. In previous research on American and Scotch whiskey, Lahne and his collaborators had noted that the chemical lines between rye and bourbon were indistinct. Lahne liked that because, as a professor, he says he’s always looking for things that are “attention grabbing”. It was very much a shot across the bow of American whiskey’s conventional wisdom that sprouted some debate in professional distillers’ online groups. Last January, he and three co-authors published a paper claiming even well-trained tasters can’t reliably distinguish between bourbon and rye whiskey. Jacob Lahne (pronounced “lahn”) is a whiskey drinker and flavor scientist. Can you really taste the difference between bourbon and rye, or just think you can?ĭr. This should help you to wake up refreshed and make you less inclined to reach for the snooze button. This information is then used for the device’s “smart alarm,” which will wake you up during a light sleep phase within a half hour of your preferred time. The Sleep Pill attaches to your pillow and monitors your actual sleep patterns. The Sense sits on your bedside table and keeps track the temperature, light, and air quality, and will alert you with a soft glowing orange light if you don’t have ideal conditions for sleep. The Hello Sense and Sleep Pill work in tandem to monitor your sleep. After all, that is why we hit the snooze in the first place, right? The Hello Sense sleep monitor and the accompanying Sleep Pill can help you get of bed in the morning by ensuring that you get a good night’s sleep. While we’re not sure how effective Pavlok is when it comes to losing weight or beating a nicotine addiction, an electric shock will certainly wake you up in the morning. Eventually, they will associate the painful shock with the bad habit and quit. The idea is that someone wearing one of these wristbands will shock themselves whenever they start thinking of doing something like biting their nails or smoking a cigarette. Squirrels also grow thicker fur to help them survive the harsh weather and retain heat from the winter sun. They also build nests in different locations as a survival technique against predators. Squirrels tend to build more nests during the warmer seasons and stay in them during the winter to conserve their energy. They use lots of leaves, twigs, and moss to thicken and keep their nests well-insulated. However, during the winter, squirrels make a thicker version of their summer nests. So what do squirrels do during winter? Well, squirrels have to do a lot of preparation to ensure they survive the cold winter months. What do squirrels do during winter?ĭuring the winter season, food supplies are scarce, and weather conditions are harsh. Cleaning your gutter of nuts, acorns, and leaves is a good way to ensure squirrels stick to trees and prevent them from scampering around your garage or attic. You can find squirrels nesting on tall trees, attics, and garages. Squirrels typically nest alone unless they have their young or are caring for their litter. Also, they build multiple nests as a backup plan. They work to make sure their nest is warm during cold temperatures. Generally, squirrels build themselves a drey using branches and twigs for shelter. The ground squirrels live in burrows and dens deep in the ground, while the tree squirrel lives in dreys on trees. Where do squirrels live in the winter? Photo by Tj Holowaychuk on Unsplashĭuring the winter, squirrels live in what is called dreys. Thanks to their photo-neuroendocrine system, a squirrel simply knows when the autumn season is wrapping up and begins to prepare for the winter. A squirrel simply prepares for the coming winter, gathering enough to last them the entire winter season. Most squirrels do not hibernate because they don’t need to. Other squirrel species will need to eat, pee and carry out metabolic functions at some point during the cold seasons. Other squirrel species don’t have the same body mass as ground squirrels and cannot hibernate. This will enable the ground squirrel to survive without eating, drinking, urinating, and carrying out other body functions during winter. They can reduce bodily functions like heart rate, breathing, and other metabolic activities by modifying their behavior. Ground squirrels are the only real hibernating squirrels. However, as the temperature begins to dip, we see fewer squirrels around.Īs we mentioned earlier, not all squirrels hibernate during winter. Like the eastern gray squirrel, other squirrels prefer the sunset to the sunrise. Some tree squirrels are also early risers. They are more active during daylight hours. We get to enjoy the playfulness of tree squirrels running around during the summer and autumn seasons. This is an extended period of extreme inactivity which could last for years. For example, insects go through what is called diapause. In the animal kingdom, hibernation means different things. Hibernation could take place for a few days and even months. They also don’t need to get rid of waste. This way, the animal doesn't have to search for food and water. They then rely on fat reserves for the energy they need to continue to breathe and stay alive and warm. The animal’s body shuts down, reducing the animal’s metabolism. In this state, temperature, breathing rate and heart rate, and other metabolic activities drop to allow animals to conserve energy and survive during colder weather. Hibernation is an animal survival mode that involves a state of dormancy for warm-blooded animals. When exploring if squirrels hibernate, let's first look at what hibernation means. What does hibernation mean? So what do most squirrels do during winter? Squirrels are less active during colder months, and you may ask the question: Do squirrels hibernate during winter? The simple answer is no. We see squirrels sitting on trees, raiding the bird feeders and gardens, and digging up holes to store nuts for the winter. I am just unable to sort them to place the featured jobs at the top.
